Five Rivers

Mahabaleshwar

is the source of the Krishna River that flows across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana andAndhra Pradesh. The legendary source of the river is a spout from the mouth of a statue of a cow in the ancient temple of Mahadev in Old Mahabaleshwar.

When Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva came to Mahabaleshwar to perform a ‘Yagna’, Lord Brahma failed to bring along his consort, Goddess Savitri. Since his wife’s presence was essential to perform the Yagna, Lord Brahma hastily married a local woman named Gayathri. Upon knowing this, Goddess Savitri expressed her wrath by transforming all the gods into rivers, while the gods also transformed her into a river. Thus Brahma (Venna River), Gaythri River, Vishnu (Krishna River), Shiva (Koyna River) and Savithri rivers originated in this place and it is termed ‘Panchganga.’

An interesting thing to notice is that 4 other rivers come out from the cow's mouth apart from Krishna and they all travel some distance before merging into
  1. Krishna. These rivers are the
  2. Koyna,
  3. Venna (Veni),
  4. Savitri, (Harehareshwar) and
  5. Gayatri.
