Baba Lokenath

Guru Bhagwan Ganguly could realize the divine providence of Lokenath’s birth so he readily agreed to initiate Lokenath and lead him further, but a unique event happened at this time. Lokenath’s playmate Benimadhav, who was of the same age as Lokenath, insisted that he too would renounce the world, and become a sannyasi along with his friend and leave home with Gurudev. His determination was so strong that Gurudev agreed to this earnest prayer of the boy and initiated both Lokenath and Benimadhav together in Gayatri Mahamantra.

Sun

After glorification of pilgrim spots, the glory of Gayatri, rise of Vishwamitra from the position of Rajarshi to Brahmarshi with the blessing of Goddess Gayatri, and the main names of Lord Sun (Suryadev) and his mantra have been described. In this context, it is said that Lord Sun remains present in all the ten directions. He is worshipped with Gayatri mantra. The men who bow to Suryadev, become as radiant as him. The men who perform yajna after taking bath at the dawn on the day of Sunday in the month of Paush become free from lust, anger, and attachment. Those who perform shraadh (post- funeral rite) related with forefathers and feast Brahmins on this day secure the supreme position. Those who make worship of Sun during the period of Sankranti never face adversity.

Five Rivers

Mahabaleshwar

is the source of the Krishna River that flows across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana andAndhra Pradesh. The legendary source of the river is a spout from the mouth of a statue of a cow in the ancient temple of Mahadev in Old Mahabaleshwar.

When Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva came to Mahabaleshwar to perform a ‘Yagna’, Lord Brahma failed to bring along his consort, Goddess Savitri. Since his wife’s presence was essential to perform the Yagna, Lord Brahma hastily married a local woman named Gayathri. Upon knowing this, Goddess Savitri expressed her wrath by transforming all the gods into rivers, while the gods also transformed her into a river. Thus Brahma (Venna River), Gaythri River, Vishnu (Krishna River), Shiva (Koyna River) and Savithri rivers originated in this place and it is termed ‘Panchganga.’

An interesting thing to notice is that 4 other rivers come out from the cow's mouth apart from Krishna and they all travel some distance before merging into
  1. Krishna. These rivers are the
  2. Koyna,
  3. Venna (Veni),
  4. Savitri, (Harehareshwar) and
  5. Gayatri.
